You’ve been there a thousand times before. The phone rings, you see a phone number on the caller ID that you don’t recognize and you don’t pick up the phone. Instead you opt to allow them to leave a message and you’ll get back to them if it’s important. One problem occurs; they decide not to leave a message. Now you may be accustomed to checking out a online web listing service to see who it was that called. Instead you find that the person who called used a cellular phone and you are not able to see who it was that called. Your only alternative would be to take a chance calling them back and perhaps them being someone you really don’t want to talk to. Does that sound familiar to you?

It has been this way for a while. Cell phone privacy is a big issue. Due to regulations there have been certain restrictions placed on the availability of reverse informational searches with cell phone numbers and carriers.

Privacy is a good thing, we all want it. But when someone calls us and we are not given information as to who is trying to reach us our privacy is invaded. I know of many people personally who have been stocked by people who are not all there up stairs. Or random numbers keep dialing you without revealing their identity. Unfortunately law enforcement can be somewhat limited in helping you with these kinds of situations in most cases.

Since this scene plays out so often with us the question becomes what can I do to protect myself and understand better who is trying to contact me? Well first you could decide to develop a policy of never picking up phone numbers you don’t know. If the call is important, you may reason, they can just leave me a message. If they never leave a message there is never a need for me to call them back. You could also attempt to call them back yourself from an unidentified phone number and play the game with them. Or you could enlist the service of an independent cell phone directory that will give you the background information you seek. If the redundant calls become harassment you may also need to enlist the services of a private investigator.

With the rapid advancement of technology, many of us feel that our right to privacy is being threatened. Unlisted phones numbers were at first introduced just for this reason, to protect our privacy. Unlisted numbers made it very hard to discover information about you without paying a lot of money for private investigation services. These days you can find directory assistance services even for phone numbers that are unlisted.

Reverse cell phone lookup has only added further discomfort to our already growing discomfort regarding our privacy. These days the only thing you have to do is to type in the number in one of many free internet reverse phone lookup services and provided that the number in question is not unlisted, you will have the persons name, address and many other personal information right before you.

So how can you protect yourself?

1. Always, always have all your phone numbers unlisted. Provide your phone number only on a need to know basis, to your family and close friends.

Even if someone wants to pay for that information, it will be very hard to obtain your personal information in this way, if your phones are unlisted.

This should be your first line of defense, and in case that your number is already listed ask your service provider to change it, and then have it unlisted.

2. Use caller ID blocking system. Most cell phone models have that function ready for use, so why not use it if you have to call someone not on your friends list.

When calling friends however it is always good to let them see who is it that is calling them. You can always dial *67 before actual phone number, that will prevent your number from showing up.

The person you are calling will see just blank space with a message unknown or private being displayed instead of your number.

3. Government laws. Government has many regulations and laws in place that protect your private information. OK, so maybe these laws are not perfect, but they do limit the amount of information that can be gathered about you without your approval.
Actually in this case reverse cell phone lookup is safer then most other information gathering services. For example, information from your drivers license or social security card can be far more dangerous and easier to use if someone would want to steal your identity.

Finally reverse cell phone lookup is not the major thing that should worry you concerning your privacy. Besides that with a few simple steps you can make reasonably sure that, your private information is safe and secure.

The majority of people who choose to buy a refurbished or used cell phone do it so that they can make and receive phone calls whenever and wherever. Technology is always changing and with society getting more used to the wireless options, cell phone companies and designers are developing fresh and ingenious ways that you are able to use that cell phone. Here are seven ways of how your Blackberry and modern technology are making your life just a bit easier.

Way 1 ” Audio Recorder To Keep A Record Of Important Calls

While you can use your cell phone’s recorder to get the professor’s memos and lectures in your class, that recorder is also great for current calls. For instance, your significant other calls to give you a list of items needed from the store. Instead of talking while you’re shopping, record the message during the call and play it back while you’re going around the store. This way you won’t forget anything. This is certainly easier than having to access the voicemail (plus you may end up wasting cell phones minutes). Before you go nuts with this recording feature, you need to know what your laws are about recording someone on the phone; it may be a state that requires the person have knowledge about the recording.

Way 2 ” Have Notes? Take Pictures and Get Digital Copies.

Many people have another way to get notes from the professor or classmates; use the phone’s camera option to get a picture of them. However, a free online service allows you to change those whiteboard pictures into a “pdf” or “jpg” and store it in the online account you have. Not only that but it will clean up the image to make it highly legible. The option called Qipit definitely beats having to scan the documents.

Way 3 ” A 411 Alternative That’s Free

Many people don’t realize it but there is a free option to the 411-directory assistance number. Instead of paying for your assistance call, use the 1-800-FREE-411 number on your used Blackberry.

Way 4 ” Flashlight/Camera Flash

Many people use their refurbished cellular phones backlight for a flashlight when they need to see in the dark. Yet, when you’re in need of a light that’s just a bit more powerful, you want something that will stay on longer than five or 10 seconds and don’t require you to keep pressing a button. This is when you can use the phone’s camera flash to give you light. Read through the phone’s manual to determine if the camera has a “steady” light option that you can enable. If you notice there is no option such as this, you can record video with the flash to give you steady light for a minute amount of time.

Way 5 ” Google Can Text You

Believe it or not, you don’t need Internet access on your used Blackberry to use the Google service. All you need to do is text in 466453 (spells Google in numeric code) and get a text message that gives you results. Discover the things you need quickly, all without having to use the Internet to do so.

Way 6 – Instant Tracking Notifications For Free

Again, you don’t need Internet access to get great SMS texting service that will let you know where your packages are in real-time. This is wonderful when you’re running errands and need to know if an important package or letter arrived at the home or office. Be sure you sign up with TrackThis (at www.usetrackthis.com); you’ll need to create yourself a free account and enter your entire package tracking information. Once you do this, you’ll receive the tracking data including where it’s at, when it’s out for delivery, if it’s been delayed or delivered.

Way 7 – Send Friend’s Voicemails Without Disturbing

When you have a refurbished Verizon blackberry and you’ve got a friend using the same refurbished Verizon blackberry, you may need to call them but don’t want to bother them at a bad time; send a message right to their voicemail without ever having their phone ring. You may need to speak with your provider’s customer service to understand how this works.

As you can see, these are seven simple ways to use your cell phone beyond how you do now. Use these options to make your life run a little smoother.

With the prevalence of texting today there are a few dos and don’t that everyone should abide by. Texting is still relatively new so the unspoken rules of texting are still being written and changed. With the advent of newer and newer technology the language of texting continues to evolve. Here are few tips to keep yourself in the clear while texting.

1) Don’t write one word texts. Not all of us have unlimited texting so when you send a one word text like “hi” or “OK” you might as well just not send anything at all because you are costing us a text for unimportant information.

2) Don’t use obscure text language. “LOL” or “BRB” are OK, but the more obscure texting terms that few people know or use like “NALOPKT” or “TLK2UL8R” are better left out. Remember that if someone doesn’t know your text acronym than it is going to be even more effort to explain it to them than it would have been to have just typed it out like normal. Context is also important, if you are talking about going to play paintball with your friend it is acceptable to shorten something like ” paint ball guns ” to “pball guns”

3) Don’t text while inebriated. No good can ever come of drunk texting. If you are a notorious drunk texter, before you go out tell your friends to stop you from texting if you get too drunk. Friends don’t let friends drunk text, like they say.

4) Don’t overuse smiley icons. Unless you are a 12 year old girl, the use of smiley icons should be used sparingly ‘lest people think you critically insane or a weirdo.

5) One word texts are bad but so are lengthy, paragraph-long stories that could be boiled down into a few sentences. A lot of phones will cut off texts that are too long so don’t waste the time typing out a novel-length message to your friend when it is likely going to be cut off halfway through.

6) Be careful about sarcasm when texting. Sarcasm does not always come across well in text form so be careful when sending that sarcastic text to a friend or especially a new acquaintance who might not know your sense of humor yet. Play it safe and only use sarcasm with your close friends to ensure that your joke doesn’t get taken the wrong way.
